At the age of 17 years I cycled over the world’s highest motorable road, the Khardung Pass, at a height of 18,370 ft. I was leading a team of four youngsters on a 32 day expedition covering some 2,200 kms, through the majestic Himalayas. Believe me this was something that changed my life……….!

If you are looking for a challenging cycling experience and some of the best downhill freewheeling in mountain cycling in the world, then head for the Himalayan range in Northern India! This part of the Himalayas, with its varied geology, provides some of the hardest, greatest, and trickiest trails for mountain biking. It offers a big challenge for the adventurous who dare to try it.

Some of the most famous places for cycling in the Himalayan region are located in the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh including Kinnaur and Spiti & Ladakh valleys. While peddling you cross some of the very high mountain passes. The Khardung La Pass, in Ladakh is the highest motorable pass in the world – the views are absolutely spectacular. Other high passes are Baralachala Pass (4,892 m), Lachalangla Pass (5,065m) and Tanglangla Pass (5,360m), Kunzum Pass (4551m). Every bend in the road provides a fresh jaw-dropping view!

Cyclists peddle at their own pace discovering amazing mountain beauty, miles of serene rural dirt tracks and tranquil dirt roads, high altitude lakes, high mountain passes hidden away from the bustle of town life and well off the tourist track. You will travel through lush-green terraced fields, small villages with ancient Hindu temples and Buddhist monasteries and shrines still preserved after many centuries.

Cycling is a wonderful way to get about in this region and to enable travellers to witness the timeless cultural celebrations and life styles of the mountain people as well as the rich bio-diversity of the Himalayan heritage. It provides you with plenty of opportunities to stop by the roadside, talk to the people in the countryside, stop at the villages to find out more about their way of life along with astounding landscapes, and enjoy eating at local restaurants. Individuals and families, or adventure groups – everyone is invited for mountain cycling tours. Get to ride the glorious Himalayan Mountains, there are dozens of less frequented routes in the Himalayas where travelling by cycle is an entirely joyful experience.

Supported cycling – what we provide

We will arrange bicycles for you which are specially designed for mountain expeditions. This means they are fitted with appropriate gears so that the cyclist needs to do less work going up hill. We also provide helmets and safety pads, a first aid kit, and a puncture repair kit. There are two available options: You can go on a self-supported trip, with all the necessary equipment and the supplies provided on the bike itself, or you can have a jeep support carrying all the equipment, so you need not carry anything on the bicycle. In addition, you are also provided with mountain guides, maps, tools and other necessities. We will provide you with accommodation booked in at guest houses/hotels or home stays, or in tents. We shall also provide all meals, including mineral water throughout the trip.
